Is there a selection process for volunteers?

After receiving an official application to volunteer , the outback links coordinator will contact the prospective volunteer. An informal interview will be conducted and current volunteer opportunities will be explained, referees contacted and appropriate applications for criminal history checks will be completed. In some cases a medical certificate may be sought.
Volunteers will be advised if a suitable link with an outback situation can be arranged.

How long would a volunteer placement be?

It is expected that no placement would be longer than 4 weeks in duration. Times will vary in accordance with the need. It is best to discuss expectations and availability prior to making a link.

What training will I receive?

Orientation may be in the form of information gatherings, audio visual briefings, written information or personal consultation. Contact support will be provided from the coordination office and in some cases through the Frontier Services staff network for the length of the placement.

Will there be any reimbursement of any expenses I incur whilst volunteering?

All expenses in relation to travel, living and accommodation will be met by the volunteer. All out of pocket expenses, that could be incurred in relation to the volunteer work would be negotiated prior to the placement.

What benefits could I expect from this volunteer work?

This is a unique opportunity to experience life in the outback, see new and different places and make new friends in the process.

Will I be covered by any insurance?

Volunteers will be covered for personal injury whilst undertaking duties with Outback Links. Cover applies to voluntary workers aged between 12 and 85 years of age.
Volunteers will be protected from the financial repercussion of public liability.
Comprehensive motor vehicle insurance is the responsibility of the volunteer.

I live on a property and could really use a helping hand, but how can I repay the volunteer?

This is a unique experience for the volunteer. Without even realizing it you would be sharing the essence of the bush, its’ beauty, its’ ruggedness, its’ history in your part of the world. The volunteer has the opportunity to develop a better understanding of Outback Australia and in particular the distinctive history of your location.

Can anyone use this service?

Yes, anyone in outback Australia that is in the area served by on location Frontier Services staff. We do ask that the property/ environment can adequately and safely accommodate a volunteer.

Will the property need to provide accommodation?

This will vary with each situation. Many volunteers have their own in the form of a caravan or motor home. Some others could need accommodation such as quarters. In other situations it may be appropriate for the volunteer to live in the family home for a short period.
