Kununurra, Western Australia.
Frontier Services has been operating community care services in Kununurra since 1992 when the Home and Community Care (HACC) program commenced. Other programs include Mental Health Respite, day respite (National Respite for Carers Program or NRCP), overnight cottage respite (NRCP) and 11 Community Aged Care Packages (CACP). Ninety per cent of clients are Aboriginal people from the area. The centre operates as a day centre for over 25 clients and also has a four-bed facility for overnight respite. In June 2011, the service moved from a renovated house to a large, purpose-built building near to other health services.
Meals on Wheels are delivered five days a week. Medication prompts are given twice daily on weekdays and on Saturday morning. Clients are also supported with transport, advocacy, shopping, domestic assistance and personal care. Carers are provided with respite via the day centre and overnight respite facilities. Social activities include participation in cultural events, barbeques, craft activities, outings to the park, visits to the local aged care facility, involvement in annual NAIDOC celebrations, attending rodeos and an occasional visit to Lake Argyle.
Staff include a Manager, an Administration Assistant, a part-time Respite Options Coordinator, a part-time Registered Nurse and several Community Support Workers.
The service works with other service providers in Kununurra such as the Aged Care Assessment Team, health services, disability services, legal services, Centrelink, Homeswest, Indigenous arts and language centres, employment services and other regional HACC and respite providers. This enables a wide ranging and coordinated approach to care provision.
