Cunnamulla Patrol

Cunnamulla, Queensland

This patrol commences at the NSW/Qld border on the Mitchell Highway and heads 230 kilometres north to Wyandra, east about 100 kilometres and west to Nockatunga, about 319 kilometres out of Cunnamulla. It is roughly 100,000 square kilometres in area.

The major communities include Cunnamulla, Eulo, Thargomindah and Wyandra. The area is made up of marginal pastoral stations. In the west of the patrol is a good size opal field based on Yowah. The area has many "characters" and a colourful history. Tourism in the area is well established although there are many kilometres in between centres.

Until recently this area was served by a parish minister, however with financial and population decline the Presbytery reviewed the ministry in the region. It became evident that there were some major social concerns in the Cunnamulla community and beyond that needed to be addressed. Frontier Services was approached to see if it could assist with funding so that the ministry could be reshaped into a three fold approach.

The approach would be to serve the congregation in the area, look at community development in Cunnamulla and share with those living on pastoral stations.

Pastor Dennis Cousens began in this placement in February 2008.
