Andamooka, South Australia.
The Andamooka Community Support Service is staffed by a Coordinator and an Assistant Coordinator, as well as a number of volunteers. It is co-located with the Andamooka Community Health Service and serves the community situated in the opal fields some 500 to 600 kilometres from Adelaide.
In 1995, an Aged Care Advisory Committee was formed by the nursing staff to survey the needs of the ageing popuation in Andamooka and indicated a need for expansion of existing services, particularly to support elderly single men in the community. A HACC funding application was completed and approved in 1996 and the Andamooka Community Support Service was established. It has continued to grow to meet the growing needs of the community.
The Service provides home help and supports the frail, aged and a growing number of young people with disabilities. Staff and a pool of volunteers help provide care, support and a transport service to enable the senior residents to remain in their own homes and to access services in nearby Roxby Downs.
