Marla Community Health Service

Marla, South Australia.

The Marla Community Health Service is managed by two Remote Area Nurses on a rotating roster. Marla is some 3.5 hours north of Coober Pedy and is a service town on the Stuart Highway.

The population at Mintabie, 37 kilometres from Marla, used to be significant with many men who settled between the wars and who have always lived in the opal mining communities, often alone.

A clinic was opened at Mintabie on 1 June 1990 and a service to Marla commenced in 1995.

As the Mintabie community has declined, services have been centralised at Marla since 2003. A part-time service continued to operate at Mintabie until late 2009.

The clinic is open each day and nursing staff can be reached in an emergency. The Royal Flying Doctor Service operates a fortnightly clinic.
