NT Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS)

Darwin and Alice Springs, Northern Territory.

The project is based in Darwin and services all of the Northern Territory including remote Indigenous communities. DBMAS has outreach officers in Katherine and Alice Springs. The Alzheimer’s Association NT established the project in 1997 and Frontier Services became the auspicing body in February 1999. In 2007 the original service (Territory Older Persons Support Service) was retendered and refunded as NT DBMAS with a broader mandate and charter.

DBMAS is a referral service which provides information and advice, specialist assessment, clinical supervision and mentoring, tailored information and education to those caring for people with dementia where the behaviour impacts on care.  Brokerage funds enable the service to be responsive to needs of the person through access to staff and or equipment as required. DBMAS also provides a 24-hour help line.

In 2004 the services of a part-time Psychogeriatrician was secured to assist in the assessment and management of complex clients. This position continues to provide the only access in the Northern Territory to a Psychogeriatrician.

NT DBMAS is also brokered to WA DBMAS to cover the Kimberley ACAT region of WA.
